GET YOURSELF READY
I used to dread reading the old testament. Last year when a group of us did the bible in a year the old testament really brought us all down. Now that we are doing the characters of the bible the old testament has really come to life. I now have realized just how important the old testament is. This past week our bible study studied Jeremiah. While studying there were three words that jumped off the page- GET YOURSELF READY!
I am one of those types of people that I have to get myself ready. If I am leaving for a weekend or just if it is for the day, I have to have everything picked up. Clothes washed, dishes clean, floor vacuumed, and bed made. But what is God actually saying to us in this scripture? I don’t really think he is saying get ready for the day by picking up our mess. He is telling us to get ready and be expectant of what is to come what our job is to be.
DIVE INTO SCRIPTURE
New International Version
17 “Get yourself ready! Stand up and say to them whatever I command you. Do not be terrified by them, or I will terrify you before them. 18 Today I have made you a fortified city, an iron pillar and a bronze wall to stand against the whole land—against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests and the people of the land. 19 They will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the Lord.
There it is GET YOURSELF READY! Just what is God telling Jeremiah? What is going on?
God called Jeremiah. He called him to deliver news to not only the Jews but to the whole nation. The people had turned on God, worshipped false gods, and sinned greatly. Jeremiah had a huge task in front of him. It was a tough job. A job that turned off the light, whereas his predecessor like Samuel had been given the job of turning on the light. His job was going to be difficult. He would be ridiculed. He would be overwhelmed but the job was critical and crucial for the nation.
God was warning Jeremiah- GET YOURSELF READY – for the task I have given you.
What task has God given you? Are you ready for the task? How do you get ready for the task?
- ANSWER THE CALL- obey even when difficult. (say to them whatever I command you)
- HAVE NO FEAR- fear not for God is always with us. (do not be terrified by them)
- ALWAYS BE FAITHFUL- God is with you (I have made you strong)
- TRUST IN THAT NOT SEEN- we don’t know the future, we don’t even know tomorrow, trust the road He places us on (they will not overcome you)
- GOD RESCUES US- (I am with you and will rescue you)
We have no idea what we will be up against today or tomorrow, but we do know we need to GET OURSELVES READY!
